Benefits of Swim Lessons for Babies

What Are the Benefits of Swim Lessons for Babies?

If we could give you one bit of unsolicited advice about swim lessons for babies, it would be: Start early!

Of course, it’s never too late to learn to swim, and we teach classes for adults as well as children. But it’s a wonderful gift to cultivate a love of swimming at a young age. At Tom Dolan Swim School, we have created our Waterbabies classes to help babies and toddlers – ages 3 months to 2 1/2 years old – build comfort and confidence in the water. In each small class, you and your baby will spend time in the pool, playing, singing and exploring to strengthen basic water safety and foundational swimming skills.

We believe so strongly in early swim lessons that we offer our Waterbabies I classes to all 3 to 5-month-old infants for free. Here are some of the benefits of signing your baby up for swim lessons.

Early Water Acclimation  from Swim Lessons for Babies

Babies haven’t had time to develop fears or aversions related to the water. As they grow older, they might become more apprehensive about swimming or be influenced by their peers, so it’s a huge advantage to start early.

Safety Fundamentals

Water safety is baked into our curriculum, starting with our Waterbabies classes. Drowning is a leading cause of death among young children ages 1 to 4, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends starting swim lessons as soon as your child is ready. Even infants can learn basic swimming skills – like rolling over and floating on their backs – that can save lives.

Bonding Time

Because parents and caregivers are active participants in Waterbabies classes, each lesson becomes a valuable opportunity to spend time with your baby. As they splash and play with you in the pool, you get to be part of their learning and growth.

Strong Mind & Body

Research suggests that swimming may advance cognitive functioning and physical and mental development, and support reading skills, language development, academic learning and spatial awareness later in life. Early swim lessons are also associated with improved coordination and balance, as well as increased confidence, self-control, self-esteem and comfort in social situations.
