Choosing the right swim school for your child is a big decision. Many of our families have lots of questions before they register for lessons, so we’ve compiled a list of frequently queries and responses. (This is Part II; be sure to check out Part I as well!)
How long are swim lessons?
All of the lessons at Tom Dolan Swim School are 30 minutes, except for the stroke enhancement levels, Sailfish and Tiger Shark. These two lessons run for 45 minutes. We recommend arriving around 15 minutes early before each lesson to leave enough time to check in at reception, and change into swimsuits.
How do kids learn proper technique?
In our lessons, we don’t focus on swimming the fastest or the longest distances. We emphasize swimming correctly, with precise technique. Our instructors teach children how to swim shorter distances properly; this helps them learn faster, reserve energy, and develop accurate muscle memory for when they do take on longer distances.
How much do lessons cost?
At Tom Dolan Swim School, we use a monthly billing system to offer the most flexibility and continuity for our families. We strongly believe that swimming is an essential life skill, and that kids benefit enormously from year-round instruction. We bill the first day of every month, prorating the fee if you start later in the month, or if the school is closed for lessons on public holidays. Children also receive one free make-up lesson per month.
Here’s a breakdown of our fees:
- 1 lesson per week: $102
- 2 lessons per week: $188.70 (2 or more lessons per week result in a 15% discount beginning with the second lesson)
- Babies 3-6 months old receive free lessons in Water Babies I level
- Families with 3 or more children enrolled in lessons receive a 15% discount on each child’s class
Walk-In Lesson: $25 per lesson
Private Lesson: $60 per lesson (30 minutes in duration)
Initial Registration Fee: $32 per swimmer (Includes TDSS swim bag, car magnet and swim cap)
What’s a normal timeline for moving to the next level?
Since every swimmer learns at a different pace, we encourage children to enjoy the learning process, practice steadily, and strive for their personal best. The goal is not to move as quickly from level to level, but to foster a lifelong love of swimming, and to keep building fundamental skills.
Do you offer assessments during swim lessons?
Yes, we have an ongoing assessment program, so you can always be updated on your child’s progress in lessons. Our managers (you’ll see them on deck in bright red polo shirts) are trained instructors, and they evaluate swimmers during all lesson shifts. Managers even use tablets to add live skill notes for swimmers, which you can access through your online customer portal. Feel free to ask managers any swimming-related questions when you see them.
