Dear TDSS Families,
I hope you are safe and healthy during this uncertain and extraordinary time. I also hope you are following the social distancing and social grouping restrictions to help flatten the growth curve of COVID-19. I know the quarantine with kids is a significant adjustment to your day, and I wish you all the best while finding your new “normal.” If it makes you feel better, my wife and I have four kids between the ages of 6 and soon to be 2, so our days are very long, and my wife deserves an award for managing them while I spend time trying to keep the schools in business.
Now that Governor Northam has required all non-essential businesses to shut down, we will not plan on re-opening the schools until the state deems it safe and appropriate. We miss all of our swimmers and can’t wait to get back to providing a life-skill filled with laughs and high-fives!
As you know, this is an extremely difficult time for small businesses like ours. We have seventy-six hourly employees who are currently out of work. I am, however, proud to share that we are still paying salaries and benefits to five senior staff who help run both schools and our head office. I will do everything possible to keep these great people working and paid and to get the entirety of our amazing staff back to work as soon as we reopen.
Through this challenging time, we have seen so many acts of kindness, and we have hope and belief that we can all make it through with a little help from our friends, neighbors, and the community. With this in mind, I am excited and proud to share that we have been working hard over the past ten days to pivot the business and provide a new online service offering during this COVID-19 shutdown as a temporary replacement for your regular in-person classes.
Starting on Wednesday, April 1, we will offer a monthly e-learning platform consisting of class curriculum videos, physical exercise activities, and technique tips and tricks. Your regular monthly dues for April will be suspended during the shutdown, and, instead, your account will be charged the following reduced fee for the new e-learning platform.
Cost for April’s e-learning platform
$32 – 1st child (pays for the month of April)
$18 – 2nd child
**maximum of $50 per family
What is provided for each level?
- 30-minute class video for every level, recorded by Senior Staff that includes the full class curriculum and dryland exercises to help keep your kids active and healthy.
- Multiple “Technique Tips” videos recorded by Senior Staff so that your kids can retain and continue to reinforce the muscle memory from their lessons.
- Unrestricted access to TDSS class level curriculum videos so that TDSS can help structure your day at home with your kids. Schedule specific times to view the videos to frame their focus better each day or just access them anytime you want.
All of the money paid for this new e-learning platform will go directly to senior staff salaries, and any leftover will go towards school overhead expenses during this difficult shut-down period. So, while we are excited to offer value back to you while you are stuck at home, we are also appreciative of the support you can provide by utilizing this e-learning option. You do not need to take any action if you would like to participate in this new e-learning offering during the COVID-19 shutdown. Your account will be billed the temporarily lowered rate for April on April 1.
Of course, if you are not able to support us through this offering, we completely understand and are happy to freeze your account until Governor Northam says it is safe to reopen. Your frozen account will allow you to retain your class day and time while being charged nothing until we re-open. Please contact your school to have this freeze on your account processed.

We kindly ask that you have patience with the administrative side of our business while we are so short-staffed.
Even during these stressful financial, operational times, I am honored to be running the Tom Dolan Swim School and appreciate your support as a community of customers. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know we will make it through this, and I look forward to seeing you back at the school in due time.
In the meantime, be on the lookout for news about a weekly live video check-in with me, where your kids can ask me any and all questions!
Thanks again for your support and please stay safe and healthy.
